Localization
by Scot Swordy
We see so much in the news these days about the crashing economy and the impending recession. The cost of living is getting higher all the time. The price of gasoline creeps up day by day and we see a huge increase in home foreclosure. Home foreclosure means that families are losing their homes, real communities are falling apart. Scary stuff, why wait until it’s your family? Or your friend or your neighbor? We don’t have to be so dependent on this international economic system and if it’s crashing, why would we want to be? It is not serving us well. What we can do is develop our own localized economies. We need to create our own independent systems of trade and commerce. In order to do this we must first understand the flow of money. The way things are right now, we take our hard earned cash down to the mall then we stroll into the nearest big chain store and simply give it all away! That money is then whisked out of our community never to be seen again, it is quite simply gone! Now we’re told everything is fine because they provide us with jobs. Well what that means is minimum wages with no benefits and zero job security. It also means all the businesses on our high streets being forced into bankruptcy because they can’t compete with huge chain stores that sell imports from poor countries from all around the world. So how should money flow? Firstly we don’t own money, we just use it, it’s a tool. Money is simply our servant it serves us, helping us to acquire food, shelter and our creature comforts. Money is supposed to circulate, to be passed from hand to hand within our own communities. The more hands that share our money the more prosperous the community. Imagine a game of monopoly where instead of spending money amongst the other players. The money just leaves the game every time it is spent. The game would end almost immediately and it would be no fun at all. This is what we are doing in real life when we spend our money at the mega chain stores. We take all of our money and throw it out of the game. Out of our own communities, consequently making each other poor! So now let’s imagine a different kind of economy. A localized economy! This is a world where we spend our money with our friends and neighbors. We shop in local stores and in turn the stores buy as much as they can from local producers and local growers. We eat in restaurants owned by real people who live with us in our own communities. We have vibrant market places with locally grown food and locally made products. We have vibrant lively high streets and we have gainful self employment. We all flourish in this economic model. As you can plainly see here, when we trade with each other we all get the products we need and we still have the money!!!! Let’s not be victims to a crashing world economy, let’s create our own localized economies, please do your part and think about how and where you spend your money and start spending it with your friends and neighbors, let’s start supporting each other. Let’s all be apart of bringing prosperity back home. Remember A fair exchange is no robbery and a local exchange is a blessing for us all. |
